Founded in 1996 by Wallace Corbett, Jr., Brother to Brother Sister to Sister United, Inc. (BBSSU) is a not-for-profit cycling team whose principal goal is to raise consciousness regarding HIV/AIDS and other health issues affecting people within the District of Columbia metropolitan area. The club was incorporated in 2002 and gained tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) status in 2005. BBSSU is affiliated with with the League of American Bicyclists and the Major Taylor Association.
Please view the outreach programs we conduct each year for or with our friends and beneficiaries based on the support of our membership and sponsors.
While predominately an African-American organization, the BBSSU message and fight against HIV/AIDS cross all boundaries and benefits all persons infected or affected by the disease. We invite anyone, regardless of race, sexuality or ability to join our group.
Through cycling and volunteerism, BBSSU has helped combat HIV/AIDS and encouraged people to exercise and be active in their communities. Originally formed during the inaugural Washington, DC AIDSRide, a 330-mile charity cycling event first held in 1996, BBSSU increased its numbers each subsequent year and had one of the larger groups with over 100 riders at the 2000 ride.
BBSSU has been one of the most prolific charitable cycling organizations within this area. Through cycling, fundraising and public health awareness events, hundreds of members participating over the years have raised thousands of dollars and worked to make this area a better, more informed community.
BBSSU is committed to serving the DC region so we are registered with the IRS as a tax-exempt 501 (c)(3) organization. Contributions to BBSSU are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. We are also registered as a nonprofit by the DC Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. BBSSU is an all volunteer cycling group, neither the board nor the BBSSU members are paid salaries.
