History:

While we are all about fun, Harpers Ferry is an important historical site. The location is the site of the John Brown raid to capture the Harpers Ferry Armory in 1859 and incite a revolt against slavery. This revolt is arguably considered one of the factors that led to the Civil War and the end of overt slavery. The area also saw heavy fighting during the Civil War as it was a key supply route.

In the early 1900s, the Niagara Movement, led by author and scholar W. E. B. Du Bois, held its first meeting on American soil on the campus of Storer College, now part of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. The purpose of the three-day meeting was to secure civil rights for African Americans.

Later, the area became a resort area for high society. It also featured an amusement park operated by the B & O railroad.

The event occurs RAIN or SHINE and all riders MUST wear a helmet. Registration for the ride is limited to 40 riders and all riders are required to sign a release form at registration.

The ride will begin relatively flat leaving Glen Echo National Park but will progressively become more difficult. The terrain is mountainous in spots and weather (heat) could also be a factor.
